CHICAGO — Amanda Chapel, author and managing editor of the popular weblog Strumpette, was seriously injured in a rollover crash here early Friday morning. The accident occurred at around 3:20 a.m. on the Ohio Street exit ramp off the Kennedy Expressway.
According to the Illinois State Police, Chapel, 37, was driving a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT when, for an undetermined reason, the car drifted into the center median. Chapel apparently overcorrected to the right, causing her car to go into a broadside skid across the eastbound lanes. The car then left the roadway and rolled over two times, police said.
Chapel was later transported by ambulance from the scene to Northwestern Hospital where she was listed in stable condition. According to sources, she was wearing a seatbelt but still sustained serious injuries. Initial medical reports indicate that she suffered: a fractured left clavicle, fractured pelvis, lacerated left ankle, and a cerebral concussion.
Excessive speed is believed to be the cause of the crash.
Officer Peter Cassavetti said, "By the skid marks and where she ended up, we estimate that she was traveling well in excess of 100 miles an hour. The speed limit for ramp is 45 miles an hour."
At this time alcohol is being ruled out as a cause. Citations are pending the outcome of a full investigation.
NEWS UPDATE: Ms. Chapel is schedule to be moved to an undisclosed location. No further information is available at this time.
