Pssssst. Rumor has it, there's a PR blond who's seeing red.
Got a tip yesterday that PR legend Susan Blond is more than irate at 5WPR CEO Ronn Torossian... she's threatening legal action.
For our readers under 30, Blond was Andy Warhol's number one publicity protégé. Later at 30 she became a vice president at CBS Records, the first woman ever to reach that rank at a major recording company. She then started her own PR firm 1987 and built a respected company with a long list of high-profile clients including superstars Michael Jackson and David Bowie, fashion designers and Fortune 500 companies.
Well, street cred notwithstanding, turns out she apparently had a total blond moment when it comes to Web. She never registered the domain name SusanBlondPR.com. Duh! It gets better. The word is that when Susan went to check out that domain she ended up redirected to... you guessed it, 5WPR. She went ballistic!!
Another 5WPR publicity stunt? Sure looks that way. Our source tells us that there are a whole slew of domains related to their competitors all which then redirect to the 5W site. "The intention was to learn how long it would take 5W's competitors to realize that they failed to protect their brand."
We think that here again it's a Torossian master stroke. It's got that hint of controversy. It has the sweet smell of attorneys and a good ole agency rumble. Ya know it's all going to work out, no harm no fowl. In the end, it just makes 5W look smart and their competitors look ancient, outmoded... and well Blond.
In the meantime, we'll see how far this goes. Word is that late Thursday afternoon, Torossian received a call from a very irate Susan Blond demanding that the domain be relinquished or else legal action would ensue. Supposedly Torossian then explained to Blond that he'd be more than willing to settle - in exchange for Blond shutting her doors. Needless to say the discussion ended with considerable rancor as the Blondies failed to see the humor in their Internet SNAFU.
God I love PR.
PS HowardRubenstein.com... hello!
I was reading Page Six in the New York Post this past weekend and couldn't help but chuckle at a piece, "P.R. pirate in site snookery." The bit of gossip discussed how the CEO of public relations firm 5WPR, Ronn Torossian, has been cybersquatting on domain names of his competitors. Some examples of domains directing to 5WPR.com are those for Dan Klores (danklorespr.com), Howard Rubenstein (howardrubenstein.com), and Susan Blond (susanblondpr.com). The real sites are dkcnews.com,...
