Alright, you ready for an all-out rant? You want some PR "buzz"? I'll give you buzz.
As I said in an earlier post, the wonderful Daze of Wine and Dilaudid are always followed by a deep an introspective depression. What I didn't tell you is that the tail end of the cycle is abject rage. Nerves fray. Imagine your worst hangover. You're too tired to move and too painful to stay put. Life is the TV blaring and the contrast is set to ultra high. "Mother's Little Helper" takes the edge off and God puts it back on with a vengeance. That grinding sound you hear is my teeth. It's during these times my colleagues assume well, "Amanda's on the rag." Not necessarily... but FAIR WARNING: It's tread lightly here at the Image Factory today.
So, who's in my sights? Well, unless you're new here, you pretty much know that I am particularly annoyed lately by what I call the Brokeback PR Blogger Club. That's a loose band of self-serving counter tenors who top the PR Pubsub List.
Anyway, yesterday made it crystal clear that a number of these folks need to be taken out and beaten. Severely! Here, it's one if not THE biggest stories of the year: "Former Fleishman-Hillard Execs Convicted on all Counts," and where are they? Nowhere. Not a word. And why is that? These evangelists of the "conversation"?! Because it just underscores what I've been trying to say, i.e. they're just not honest.
It's some cultural ellipsis with a glaring motive. It's the sin of omission writ large enough to be an overt act. Sure they're pretty dense but they had to go out of there way to avoid this one. And what did they talk about? Here's a sampling:
- Kami Huyse, APR, in her blog "Communications Overatures" had the post "Looking for a Painless Way to Fundraise?" Quote: "Unless you have a job title of development, fundraising for an organization or cause can be a real pain. However, public relations professionals are often asked to do it for special projects, even if that project is the baby shower of a co-worker. Web 2.0 has the answer to this problem."
- David Parmet for is "Marketing begins at Home" blog lead with the article "Wine blogging at Syndicate." Quote: "Stormhoek made several appearances last night. At Britt Blaser's apartment, a couple dozen marketing geeks gathered to enjoy the wine and the conversation. Earlier in the evening, the wine was featured at a party sponsored by KnowNow."
- Not to be outdone, Scott Baradell and his blog "Media Orchard" had the hard hitting piece, "Ben Stiller Debates Which Hilarious Wig and/or Fake Mustache to Wear for His Next Role." Sidebar: Scott's such a dink.
- Neville Hobson at Neville Hobson.com had "More communicators podcasting." He and his buddy Shel "of his former self" Holtz like to blog about blogging and podcast about podcasting a lot. Here Neville mixed it up a little. This was a blog about podcasting. He wrote, "Another new entrant to business podcasting - Arla Foods in Sweden has launched a podcast aimed at consumers in that country, offering food recipes."
- Andrea Weckerle's "New Millennium PR" blog had "Sex as a Promotion Tool Works if Done Right." Typical of the Brokeback Club, she had an article about someone else's article. "Joe Waters, who writes the wonderful Selfish Giving blog, has a tongue-in-cheek post titled Cause Marketing Porn. His post is an example of turning the usually sleazy and makes-you-want-to-immediately-disinfect-yourself garbage that's found all over the Internet on its head."
- And, of course, the self proclaimed "first blogger in PR," Phil Gomes, in "Phil's Blogservations" had a plug for a self-promotional piece he wrote for iMedia. Quote: "Eagle-eyed Robert Ricci was the first to point out that my article in iMedia Connection just ran. Many thanks to Brad Berens and Nanette Marcus!"
Frankly, Edelman's Gomes takes the gold again for the PR Special Olympics. What a self-serving douche. And that's really what it is all about. The only reason these "PR blogging experts" blog is to promote themselves. Issues? Real productive conversation? That's tantamount to believing that PRSA's Ethics Board has some justification to breathe our air.
Okay, let's back up. Granted I am a little hyper vigilant at the moment. Have you ever closed a bar? Remember the feeling you get when they turn the lights up? Prince charming who you've been swapping spit with in the back booth turns out to be some gap-toothed hunchback with hairy knuckles and a lazy eye? Forget that image. How about just the thought of the bright florescent lights in the dressing room at Needless Markup. Too much information or just the right amount? Marcy doesn't look good in that suit. She just doesn't.
Anyway, the question is, "why do I find the Brokeback Blogger Club so insulting?" Because they poop in my backyard for one. It's also a "club" that claims predominance. Gomes' "first blogger in PR?" Please. Their club doesn't facilitate any progress. Quite the opposite. They are just a new set of gatekeepers.
Bottom line: I think what I find most insulting is that PR was once a "creative discipline." It was. And now it's commandeered by light weights, self-aggrandizing kids, weasels and just plain bad liars. The business is particularly open to ridicule presently because that's who the business has directly or indirectly raised up as its "A" team. Sad.
It's a vicious cycle actually. Drive ya to drink. Thank God for Wine and Dilaudid.
